4 Reasons Why Viking Might be The Best River Cruise Line For You

Updated: May 26, 2023

Planning a river cruise can bring excitement and anticipation, but deciding which cruise line is right for you can be an overwhelming task. With its high-end amenities and luxurious vessels, Vikings river cruises might be the best choice for travellers looking to get the most out of their river cruise experience. Read on to learn four reasons why choosing Viking River Cruises could be the perfect option.

#1 Viking's Ships are Spacious and Inviting.

Viking River Cruises offer some of the most spacious and inviting vessels on the market—featuring a variety of stateroom options including full balconies, French balconies, 2-room staterooms and standard rooms. Many staterooms have floor-to-ceiling windows for maximum sightseeing capabilities. With a perfect blend of modern style and classic design, each Viking vessel also features amenities such as flat-screen televisions, private bathrooms and air conditioning.

On my most recent river cruise with Viking, I stayed in the Veranda stateroom. At 205sq ft, this room had everything you needed and some nice touches I didn't know I needed like heated floors in the bathroom and antifog mirrors. As I was travelling with a friend, we had the room arranged into two separate beds. Although there is not a lot of extra space, the room fit the two of us perfectly. If you want to learn more about the room categories on a Viking River ship read this post: A Guide to the Different Types of Rooms on a Viking River Cruise.

I was sailing on the Danube Christmas Delights itinerary in late November so we almost exclusively used the inside spaces. The lounge, dining room and Aquavit Terrance provided more than enough space for all the guests onboard.

#2 Wide Variety of Excursions and Activities Available.

While onboard Viking's vessels, you'll have ample opportunities to explore—everything from historical landmarks and active tour sites. Alternatively, their active excursions feature guided walks and bike tours while providing the opportunity to explore local customs, nature and culture.

You will have one excursion included at each port and the option to add additional excursions and experiences at an additional cost.

#3 World-Class Dining Experience and Cuisine Options.

From their regionally-sourced culinary programs to their rooftop garden, you'll be able to experience world-class dining aboard Viking. With farm-to-table menus and expansive wine lists, Viking offers something for everyone. Plus, while onboard you'll also be able to enjoy their innovative barista bar.

If you enjoy a few cocktails or drinks outside of lunch and dinner I recommend adding the Silver Spirits Package to your sailing. For about $28CND per person per day, you can enjoy premiums wines by the glass, cocktails, house wines, champagnes, beers, liquors and anything else on the drink menu. I enjoyed this addon on my river cruise with Viking and loved the freedom to explore the drink menu.
