Tipping guidelines can be one of the most confusing parts of planning a European vacation. Because every cruise line handles gratuities differently, many travelers worry about bringing the wrong currency, tipping twice, or missing key crew members.
Understanding how gratuities work across different cruise lines ensures you budget accurately and avoid any onboard surprises.
1. All-Inclusive Cruise Lines (Gratuities Built-In)
On luxury lines such as Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Emerald Cruises, and Tauck, gratuities are already included in your upfront fare.
What's Covered: Onboard crew, waitstaff, room attendants, cruise directors, and local shore tour guides.
Do You Need Extra Cash? No additional tipping is expected. However, if a crew member goes above and beyond, handing them cash directly at the end of the trip is always appreciated.
2. Lines with Daily Recommended Gratuities
Lines like AmaWaterways, Viking River Cruises, and Avalon Waterways do not automatically include shipboard gratuities in the base fare.
AmaWaterways & Avalon Waterways: Suggest around €12 to €15 per guest per day for the onboard crew, plus €3 per guest per day for the Cruise Manager. You can settle this tab at the end of your cruise by credit card or cash.
